Patient belts or gait belts are used in rehabilitation; to help maintain end user’s mobility and are also used in situations where an end user could be at risk of a fall such as when using a pivot or turning disc. Often used in combination with other transfer accessories these belts allow caregivers to ‘grab’ the belt rather than clothing, arms or body of a patient in the event of a fall and gently lower to the ground in a controlled way.
Description
Patient belts or gait belts are used in rehabilitation; to help maintain end user’s mobility and are also used in situations where an end user could be at risk of a fall such as when using a pivot or turning disc. Often used in combination with other transfer accessories these belts allow caregivers to ‘grab’ the belt rather than clothing, arms or body of a patient in the event of a fall and gently lower to the ground in a controlled way.
Using a Mini-Patient Belt allows an end user to ambulate under their own momentum but allows the caregiver to assist if they become unstable by moving closer to the end user and lowering gently to the ground. It is imperative to follow fitting instructions and understand manual handling best practice advice for device use. The mini patient belt is a standard general gait belt used in rehabilitation and mobility activity.
Patient handling belts were introduced to provide an extra layer of safety to rehabilitation particularly in those end users who can stand, have the ability to bear their own weight but are still a fall risk. Grabbing an end user under the arm or by the clothing in order to prevent a fall could result in many different scenarios not least damaging to the end user and caregiver. Whilst the patient belt is widely used in rehabilitation, they can also be used to promote exercise and mobility.
The Mini Patient belt has been manufactured in quilted polyester fabric with a non-slip inner lining and a clunk-click safety buckle with four safety grab handles.
Can be used with either two caregivers or as a single caregiver depending on a full risk assessment.
Safety: This is not a patient transfer device as such and should never be used to lift or pull an end user into a standing position. If an end user or patient cannot raise themselves to their feet from a seated position the patient belt should NOT be used. This is a safety device used to assist in the event of momentary instability either from rising from a seated or standing/walking position.
